Futures trading journal template

A futures trading journal template is a sheet with the columns a statement actually cares about. This one is a CSV you can open in any spreadsheet. It is not a broker login.

Columns

session_date is the Chicago session, not midnight and not the calendar date on an evening fill. symbol is the root and the contract month you actually traded, such as MESZ6. side is buy or sell. contracts is the quantity, and a scale-in is a second row rather than a blended price you cannot audit. entry and exit are the fill prices. ticks is the distance in minimum price steps, so ten MES ticks stay visible as ten rather than disappearing into $12.50. gross_dollars is ticks times the contract’s tick value times quantity. fees is commission plus exchange and clearing for the round turn. net_dollars is gross minus fees. statement_net is the figure from the broker statement for that session, left blank until you have it. notes is the reason you took the trade, in your words.

Three example rows

Row one: 2026-10-14, MESZ6, buy, 2, 5810.00, 5812.50, 10, 25.00, 4.50, 20.50, 20.50, “opened on the first pullback.” Ten MES ticks at $1.25 are $12.50 a contract, times two contracts is $25 gross. Row two: 2026-10-14, MNQZ6, sell, 1, 20150.00, 20154.00, 16, -8.00, 1.48, -9.48, -9.48, “short that did not follow through.” One MNQ tick is $0.50, so sixteen ticks against the trade are $8 before fees. Row three: 2026-10-15, MESZ6, buy, 1, 5804.25, 5804.25, 0, 0.00, 2.25, -2.25, blank, “scratched. Statement not imported yet.” Delete all three before you record a day that is yours. The sheet is a template, not a result.

How to import the CSV into Tiedbook later

This sheet is a journal you typed. It is not a Tradovate Orders file or a NinjaTrader executions file, so the supported parsers will not treat it as fills. When you want the day tied, export the platform file and import that on Imports. Use this CSV as the notes you do not want to lose: session date, the symbol, and the sentence in the notes column. If you still want the typed rows inside the book, open the column mapper, point session_date at time, symbol at symbol, side at side, contracts at quantity, and entry at price. Exit is a second fill you will have to add, because a round-trip row is not two executions. Read the preview before you confirm. Then import the statement and type the statement net on Reconcile, or bring the Performance CSV. A typed sheet can start the habit. The platform export is what can match to the cent. The hosted journal is $29 a month after a 7-day trial with no card. The template itself stays free, and the download does not create an account.

Why ticks are on the sheet

A futures template that stores only dollars hides the contract. Ten ticks on MES are not ten ticks on ES. The tick value calculator lists NQ, MNQ, ES, MES, YM, MYM, RTY, M2K, CL, MCL, GC, and MGC.

When to leave the sheet

A spreadsheet will not rebuild partial fills or tie a day to a broker statement. Import the platform CSV into Tiedbook when you want that. The template stays useful as a backup you can read without an account.

Questions

Is the template free?

Yes. Download the CSV. No account is required. The hosted journal is a separate paid plan after the trial.

Can I import this file back?

The columns are a journal, not a broker execution file. Use your platform’s export for the import. Keep this sheet if you want a copy you typed yourself.

What does statement_net mean?

The broker’s net for that Chicago session. Leave it blank until you have the statement. The day is tied only when net_dollars matches it.

Which tick value do I use?

MES is $1.25. MNQ is $0.50. ES is $12.50. NQ is $5. The tick value calculator lists the rest.
