Export NinjaTrader trades to CSV (and fix an empty Trade Performance)

NinjaTrader Desktop exports Trade Performance grids to CSV with a right-click. If the report comes back empty, the cause is usually a filter, a date range or a missing execution history.

Export steps

These steps follow NinjaTrader's own Trade Performance article.

  1. In the Control Center, open New → Trade Performance.
  2. Set the Date Range, and the Start and End times if you need part of a day.
  3. Use the Filter button to pick the account and, if you want, instruments.
  4. Click Generate.
  5. Open the Executions or Trades display, right-click the grid and choose Export. NinjaTrader Desktop exports CSV.

The Orders grid in the Control Center can also be exported: right-click, Export…, then CSV or Excel, per NinjaTrader's Orders display article.

Executions or Trades?

Executions are the individual fills. Trades are NinjaTrader's pairing of those fills into round trips, with P&L. NinjaTrader's Executions tab article notes the Executions tab has no P&L column; P&L is in the Trades view. The NinjaTrader help guide on performance displays says the Trades display matches by position, and a scale-in becomes separate trades.

For Tiedbook, export Executions. That is the supported import, as the NinjaTrader import doc explains: fills are rebuilt into round trips in the journal, and duplicates are skipped by execution id. The Trades grid is Beta and opens the column mapper.

Why Trade Performance is empty

  1. The account filter does not include the account that traded. Open Filter and check the Accounts list.
  2. The date range or the Start and End times miss the session. An evening fill can belong to the next trading day.
  3. Execution history is missing. NinjaTrader's help guide says the report needs historical executions, and a fill that happened while the platform was disconnected can be absent until it is added.
  4. The numbers are there but look wrong because the display is set to points, ticks or percent. Switch the display to Currency.

NinjaTrader also says the Trade Performance window should not be used as an official record. Your statement is the official record.

Check the timezone, then import

Open the CSV and look at one fill you remember. If the time is off by an hour or more, the file is in your PC's local time. Tiedbook reads a time with no zone as America/Chicago, and the session rolls at 5:00 PM Chicago. The session day guide shows how an evening fill lands on the next session. Then drop the Executions file on Imports, read the preview, and confirm. The NinjaTrader integration page lists what the import reads.
